Textillery Weavers launch Stone Belt Mosaics

Textillery Weavers (IHFC D408) is debuting Stone Belt Mixed Media Mosaics this market, the result of a partnership with Stone Belt Arc, a nonprofit organization providing education and support to more than 2,000 clients in south central Indiana. The framed designs are created by the Art & Craft division of Stone Belt Arc using recycled Textillery yarns and all are designed, packaged and distributed by persons with disabilities.

Revenue from Art & Craft projects helps support clients living independently in the community. "We're especially excited about this project," said Judith Rose, head designer for Textillery Weavers. "In addition to using recycled materials, the project utilizes the abilities of disabled persons in a workshop setting to create satisfying job opportunities and a new income stream for the agency."

Created from recycled Textillery yarns, fabrics and other "found" materials, the framed mosaics are available in two sizes, 16"x20" or 18"x 24" ($250 and $275 wholesale). Leslie Green, Stone Belt Arc's CEO, said Textillery's support lends a wonderful dimension to the Art & Craft division. "We're always looking for new projects, like this textile mosaic program, that can help empower our clients and give them a chance to showcase their creative talents."

Artists include Brooks Smith who was diagnosed with autism at an early age and has worked in the community for many years, aided by a strong personal drive and the support of family and friends. Smith's attention to detail has benefited his work as a manufacturing assembly specialist and is portrayed in his expressive, artistic mosaic pieces. Denise Hillenburg has been exploring her artistic abilities through art classes for several years. Her work, featured in large and small scale, is characterized by fanciful and sometimes humorous details.

Stone Belt was founded in 1958 by a small group of parents seeking services for their children. Textillery offers more than 600 styles and 75 solid colors in its versatile handwoven and jacquard throw collections, all of which are woven in the U.S.
