There is nothing more beautiful than looking out the back windows of your home and seeing your very own chunk of paradise. Often we pay very close attention to the aesthetics but forget about the functionality and comfort, as well as the usefulness of our outdoor furniture. As many of you have seen there are some really cheap, literally disposable patio sets that will make due for a few summers and not much more. There are however some very nice products on the market which will last for many years and prove to be cost effective.

For many years the bedding industry offered three major choices of mattresses with very little change over the past generation or so. Inner spring, goose down, and latex foam dominated the market with the inner spring option as the overall favorite. Of coarse there were the pillow tops, individually pocketed coils, and no flip models but the general mattress concept has not evolved much. Then thanks to some space age technology we have seen a surge in the newest thing to hit the furniture industry in quite some time. A specialized viscoelastic memory foam developed by NASA to be used in space flight hit the general consumer market. This was revolutionary, and the private market began using it for all sorts of products including pillows, office chairs, and bedding.

As a retailer for the past 20 plus years I have seen many trends come and go. During the 70s and 80s the large pit type sectional was a very popular for living rooms as well as game rooms. This was a sectional usually comprised of many pieces with a multitude of pillows almost always ending up in a messy pile. Often recliners and other gimmicks were added in an attempt to make this behemoth more attractive to potential consumers. Well I am pleased to say that sectionals are on the rise and they have gone through a serious face lift to become a welcome addition to most interiors. According to Furniture Today the rise in sales is due to the growing popularity in the great room and media rooms many home are being designed with these days.

When setting out to enhance your home décor it would stand to reason that the right color scheme would be a great place to start planning. Of course you can reveal your personality as well as make a statement you will want to come home to every day. For me there is nothing more appealing than some really pleasing, yet soft earth tones to smooth out the look of an
environment. Optimistic and fresh, a lighter color selection can make the room look larger and even brighten the way you feel. A few of the really popular colors that are currently being used are sage green, pumpkin, wheat, and light saffron yellow. In a sharp contrast to the wood paneling of yesteryear these colors will add a clean contrast to almost any type of furniture. Faux painting is another way to blend combinations of several tones to create a textured and multi toned look with some depth. With this type of application various finishes such as a stone or brick, even a Mediterranean appearance can be achieved.
Change the regular post into a beautiful stone like column. Remember to compliment your furniture and bring out some contrast. Light walls with richer furniture will really set off the appearance and show more depth. There are many design publications to offer good advice and examples such as Dwell, and Architectural Digest so use these as proven tools to take out some of the guess work. I do suggest leaving the ceiling an even lighter color than the rest of the walls for additional contrast, especially in smaller rooms. Hot colors will always change so updating every so often is a great way to freshen up your look with out spending a lot of money.

Spring always brings new fashion and trends in as shoppers enjoy warmer weather and get a reprieve from the cold. For those that are looking for current color trends in furniture and home design, I created this blog post. Pumpkin color has really taken off. This color is being embraced by consumers and is just not sitting on showroom floors. Sofas, chairs and loveseats in particular have been hot in pumpkin this spring. Shoppers continue to buy these pieces for their homes. Items such as accent pillows are also gaining in popularity. Many fashion and décor magazines may not have a direct picture of a pumpkin colored sofa, but you can see the pumpkin colored accent pillows on the furniture in the picture. Pumpkin has gained in popularity, because it is much softer than orange and easier on the eyes. Orange's bold and vibrant look is just too strong for most shoppers. Where pumpkin has gained in popularity, yellow has declined. I had someone say to me recently that "orange is the new yellow". There is a lot of evidence to support this comment.

I recently had the pleasure of spending some quality time in an absolutely great sofa from Ekornes, a Norwegian manufacturer that specializes in ergonomic seating. The Stressless line is a very high quality versatile grouping that offers high and low back recliners with articulating headrests and lumbar supports. With a simple push the seats recline without any levers or gadgets and glides into any position for a truly conforming fit. On the high back models the headrest smoothly curves forward allowing for a perfect television viewing or reading position. In the same motion the inner lumbar support changes position to allow for optimal lower back support. The Paradise model even has a height adjustable headrest to accommodate people of various sizes. A sleep mode can be engaged by simply pulling the headrest forward and laying the chair almost flat. The Ekornes Stressless line comes in sofas, love seats, and chairs and most sets are sold in a combination of high and low backs to fit the ideal needs of the consumer. Ekornes has been producing the line since 1972 with a very close attention to detail, and are always on the cutting edge of innovation. Find a dealer close to you and discover real comfort!
In my recent post about rising fuel costs and its impact on furniture prices I pointed out how retailers are trying to recoup some of their increased costs. What does that mean for the consumer? It means that you should always ask for the final DELIVERED price when considering a purchase.
I contacted several prominent furniture stores and asked them what it would cost to have a normal size sofa and matching chair delivered to my house. Delivery would be in the same city and not a far out of the way location. It was interesting what I discovered.

It has been 20 years since I started in the retail furniture market, and in that time there has been a huge shift in manufacturing. Production that was once dominated by the United States and Eastern Europe is now shifting more towards Asia, and the trend will continue. With no help from the high Euro dollar, companies that formerly sold their wares in a very competitive market have fallen to cutting corners and following suit with Chinese production. Don't get me wrong, there are some very strong companies like the Ekornes Stressless line from Norway that have fought off any changes in there quality line of seating groups and recliners, but they are the shrinking exception. The good news is this. The Chinese production has gotten better and better with modern automation and the need for cost conscious production around the world.

For many years the furniture industry has worked to develop durable and price effective upholsteries for the general consumer market. Of course if money is no object, premium leathers and fine fabrics are available in a multitude of colors and textures. For the average person a much more usable and cleanable covering is usually required. When guiding consumers at the retail level I always inquire about traffic levels and expectations to create a happy experience. One of the commonly used fabric options of today includes micro fibers. When I was first introduced to this seemingly to good to be true option I did have my reservations, but time has proven the product to be a very good alternative.

The cost of fuel is just crazy these days. I remember a few years back when gasoline prices skyrocketed. That was three years ago and prices still have not gotten back down to $1.50 per gallon. It’s ironic that gasoline prices often move the inverse of oil prices. Last week oil prices were dropping and yet gasoline went up.
So what do fuel prices have to do with furniture? Well actually, they have a lot to do in manufacturing costs and delivery charges which directly affect total price paid by the consumer.
