Fuel Costs Impacting Furniture Prices

The cost of fuel is just crazy these days. I remember a few years back when gasoline prices skyrocketed. That was three years ago and prices still have not gotten back down to $1.50 per gallon. It’s ironic that gasoline prices often move the inverse of oil prices. Last week oil prices were dropping and yet gasoline went up.

So what do fuel prices have to do with furniture? Well actually, they have a lot to do in manufacturing costs and delivery charges which directly affect total price paid by the consumer.

Fuel is an important component in manufacturing. Many synthetic parts that go into everyday products have some basis in fuel. Therefore, when fuel goes up, so does the cost of goods. Plastics, foam and other synthetics are all components in a sofa, loveseat, club chair or mattress.

Delivery costs also increase when fuel becomes more expensive. Industrial trucks generally use diesel engines. Diesel engines have been around for a long time and are characterized by their power and capacity for carrying heavy loads. Diesel is a byproduct of gasoline, and thus, has followed the rising prices of gasoline over the last three years.

Furniture shoppers should inquire about the delivery costs when considering a purchase. Retail stores want to recoup their expenses so make sure that you have a clear understanding of the final delivered price to your home.
