The 1920's and 30's will forever be remembered for the Great Depression, prohibition, and some really roaring times. For the design oriented person it will be remembered for the style that combined overstated glitz and art into a concept called Art Deco. True, it was ahead of its time but as we know, all things old become new again. There is a lot of demand for some of the original classics, and consumers are paying top dollar for some of the well kept originals. Knoll and Hermann Miller were some of the famous makers who commissioned top designers of the day to create pieces for their following. Paul Frankl, Donald Desky, and Gilbert Rohde are among these furniture designers who have a renewed appeal. On a recent trip to New York City, I had a first hand look at some of the great modern designs that have endured and look as stunning today as they did 75 years ago. You can see a lot of the beautiful furniture and accessories of the Art Deco period at Modernism.
Here is a great way to get some great looking modern art that is sure to brighten up your room, and put a smile on your face. From Textile Arts comes the marimekko do it yourself kit. Well it's actually two kits, one a frame kit with everything except the fabric in case you have your own.The second a fabric kit which has all the framing supplies as well as your choice of fabric. There is several size options, 36 or 54 inch which you will need to specify in the order process. You will need a staple gun, and an iron, and in one hour you will have a great looking wall hanging. Once you have the frame you can simply reorder fabric to change up the look over the years.
Happy July 4th from Furniture Fashion! It is very rainy here in Houston which is putting a damper on many celebrations. It's a good day to visit the movies or to do some work around the house.
