Hool Compact Shelving by Christian Vivanco

christian vivanco hool shelves.jpg

The Hool is the next installment of functional design offered by Christian Vivanco. This budding designer has been pumping out some very striking designs. The Hool is not yet in production, but I can't imagine it will be long. I expect some furniture producer will snatch up this talented young designer very soon.

The Hool is a perfect small space storage solution. It's tall and thin so it does not consume much of that valuable floor space. The Hool has a total of four compartments distributed on the different faces of the unit. The unit spins to allow easy access, and there is a hook on one side for coats or other clothing.

One thing that I very much like about the Hool is the ability to rotate particular shelves out of sight. So you can have a messy shelf or store items away from prying eyes. It's a great piece and I hope to see it in production soon.

What is Interior Design?

Interior Design by BILL SOFIELD AND BAKER FURNITURE.jpg
If one were to ask consumers what interior design was, there would be many varied answers. If you ask an interior designer, it's an art.

Fashion follows art, and interior design typically follows fashion. Like both fashion and art, interior design has style, form, texture, color, pattern, lines, and mass. Designers use light, materials, proportions, scale, emphasis, and balance to shape spaces that are beautiful, as well as functional.

Many clients are unsure of where, or how to start their new design project, and don't know what to do to get started. One of the best ways to get an idea of what you want is to buy home design magazines. Lots of them. Cut out pictures of things you like. These things could be products, color schemes, or even the overall feel of a room shown. By doing this alone you have helped to narrow down your style. There are four main design styles: traditional, contemporary, transitional, and eclectic. Within these four there are many more terms that can further break down your style, but it is best to start with the basics.

Introducing J. Chandelle to the Furniture Fashion team

It is with great pleasure that I get to announce the arrival of the newest member of our team at Furniture Fashion. J. Chandelle has joined our team bringing with her an experienced background in interior design. It is our hope that her insight can help readers make their own spaces more beautiful while providing great information from a designer's perspective. J. Chandelle holds two degrees in interior design, participates in many design organizations, and has a natural ability to communicate her ideas effectively with the public.

J. Chandelle provided this quote about herself, "One of my largest goals as a professional designer is to educate those I work with about the Interior Design profession, and dispel the myth that we are pillow fluffers. Most designers have had years of training and degrees. We are charged with not only creating an attractive space, but also making the space safe, functional, and accessible. I hope through my writings I can make my readers more informed and confident consumers."

Small Space Day & Night Sleeper Sofa by American Upholstery

loft sleeper sofa american upholstery.jpg

If you live in a small space, especially an efficiency apartment, you know how hard it is to have a bed without living in a bedroom. One of the biggest challenges in small space living is sleeping in comfort.

American Upholstery has an array of sleeper sofas just for small spaces. The Natalie sleeper is billed as "the world's smallest sleeper sofa with a real sized bed". By slightly tweaking the dimensions of their sleepers they are able to produce very space efficient designs. It seems like a no brainier that if you need a sleeper sofa you are likely tight for space. So why aren't more furniture makers doing this.

The Chaise Queen Plus is a great innovative design. This sofa comes with an ottoman that adds a chaise like feel to the sofa. The ottoman also provides storage for your pillows and pajamas during the day. It's a great combination.

These sleepers are very comfortable. Unlike most traditional sleeper sofas, there are no metal bars under the mattress. Instead a solid wood base, providing a more stable, bed-like sleeping area. It supports the entire mattress. These sofas are quite stylish and are available in a huge selection of fabrics and leathers.

Experience Smooth Slopes with Casssina's Aspen Sofa

cassina contemporary chaise lounge sofa with end table.jpg
aspen modern sofa lounge from cassina.jpg
When two name like Cassina and Jean Marie Massaud team up the results are bound to be impressive, and more than likely very contemporary. The Aspen opposing sofas work well together as a long sleek single seating surface, or as individual chaise lounges. Cassina's Aspen collection includes an end table suspended on a center cylinder that blends into the side of the sofa in a very smooth transition. The sofa comes in 180 and 260cm lengths and delicately floats on two feet that remind me of ice skate blades. Here Aspen is combined with another Massaud design, the Auklund lounge chair and ottoman shown in black leather, for a most stunning modern statement.
