Who hasn't wanted to live in a loft at some point? I think we all go through a phase where we crave the ultra sheik openness of loft living. So how do you get that spacious loft feel in a small home or apartment? Well Compact Living, a Swedish company, has the solution.

Compact Living designs prefabricated easy-to-install lofts for just about any space. Just contact them with the dimensions of your space and they produce a custom loft for you. There are multiple options from sleeping lofts to larger extended living lofts.

Unlike cheaper loft bed kits that look like they have been slapped together from left over deck materials, Compact Living loft beds are constructed of high quality materials. There are multiple options for supporting the lofts from wall mounting to ceiling hangers and leg options. Each loft is designed based on your needs.

Simply lofting your bed frees up space for additional living and in a small apartment or home. It can be a significant gain. You also get the added benefit of being able to say you have a loft.

Decorate Your Home with French Patio Doors

French Patio Doors

I have always enjoyed the appeal of French patio doors in a home. The natural light that enters the room is healthy as long as it does not warm up the home too much. The small panes of glass add a touch of elegance and old world styling. French patio doors typically open up in at least two of the main frames of the door way. There are varieties that can slide on a track for more space challenged room settings. I remember the old sliding track glass doors of the 1980s where you put a safety rod in the door to prevent it being opened and prayed that the glass never broke. They were not very attractive. French patio doors on the other hand, are very attractive. Many home owners choose to put up small curtains or hang blinds on the door to prevent unwanted sunlight in warmer months or to make the room darker for sleeping. The doors pictured here are available from Peachtree Windows. You can also find French patio doors at many hardware stores. Typically, they can be custom cut to fit the dimensions that you are seeking for the room. The biggest thing to remember is how much space will be needed to effectively open up the door and not hit a wall or nearby furniture. The most common mistake is not accounting for enough room for the doors to swing open.

1980s Ettore Sottsass Carlton bookcase by Memphis Italy

If you are a fan of colors then the Carlton bookcase from Memphis Italy is sure to speak to you. This piece was designed by Ettore Sottsass in the 1980s. This multicolored bookcase is made of pattern laminate. I find this piece interesting, especially when I look at the two small drawers at the bottom. The two drawers and top look like a children's dresser in its own right. The rest of the bookcase is entirely wild building out from the two drawer area. The Carlton bookcase is probably the most famous piece from the Memphis, Italy line. I can see how, since visually speaking the bookcase is certainly going to leave an impression on any viewer. Expect to pay in the range of $6,000-$8,000 for an example in this condition. Dimensions: 75"w x 12"d x 76"h

Don't Forget the Patio Heaters

Patio Heaters.jpg

I recently sat under patio heaters at a nearby restaurant and was reminded of their usefulness. In my book, there is nothing better than enjoying the crisp, clean air of sitting outdoors. As a writer, I am always looking for the next story and in this case, it was right above me. How many of us don't get outside, because it is a little too cool? I know me for one. That does not have to be the case. With patio heaters you have the flexibility of adding heat if you need it and then turning it off when you don't need it. I found a nice stainless steel model called the TillMark Deluxe available at the PatioHeaterStore. The TillMark Deluxe can produce up to 40,000 BTUs of heat and comes with an adjustable temperature setting to put you in control. The TillMark runs on standard propane which has wide availability throughout the world. Dimensions: 20" x 20" x 93"; Price: $299

Roche-Bobois Symbole Modular Sofa Sectional

roche-bobios symbole leather sofa ottoman group

Roche-Bobois is definitely no stranger to great design and exceptional quality. The Symbole modular sofa sectional from designers R. Tapinassi and M. Manzoni as you can see looks up to Roche-Bobois standards, so what about the components. The Symbole sofa hosts a 100% goose duck down cushions surrounded by a tri-colored top grain corrected cowhide, with a solid wood frame wrapped in laminated panels, all of which rests on a solid beech pedestal. As you can see, the Omega circular bookcase works well with the curves of the sofa set. There is a lot to be said for details and they have all been covered.
