The Modern Classic Sofa by Patagonia Trading

Quite often the furniture labeled "modern classic" is just a variation of style we have seen many times over the years. The Patagonia Trading Company had a different idea in mind for their rendition of the new modern classic sofa. Two styles new for this year, the Ursula and the Morgan have some old world features for the new world modernist. The Ursula is a full size sofa with classic features like a tufted backrest and posterior, brass nail heads lining it's swooping arms, and a curved design supported by a three leg front. The Morgan sofa is a much more mainstream piece still with the curved design and tufted back but minus the nail heads and full tufts. The smaller scale makes this modern classic sofa perfect for a lounge paired up with some accent chairs, or in a pair facing each other. The Patagonia Trading Company has a refreshing collection of all original furniture for every room including some very unique beds.

1950s Mid Century George Nelson Dining Table

1950s George Nelson Dining Table

Here is a mid century George Nelson dining table made by Herman Miller in the 1950s. This product is referred to as a swagged-leg dining table. The origin of the name relates to the design of the legs which come done vertically and then sway at an angle until the legs meet the ground. The table top is made of maple as are the leg supports found underneath the table top. The legs are constructed of chrome. Market value: $2,200-$3,000. Dimensions: 47.5"diameter x 29"h.

Modern Patio Furniture by Sands Mulholland

HAND MADE SOLID MODERN CHAISE LOUNGE SANDS MULHOLLAND

MODERN WOOD CHAISE LOUNGE SANDS MULHOLLAND.jpg

Here is another all wood lounge chair by Sands Mulholland that once again shows their insight in the new age of modern design combined with old world construction and joinery. The "chaise bench" emulates the lines of their chaise lounge Furniture Fashion reviewed in a previous post, while affording a higher degree of customization in terms of lounging stance. This full length lounge chair allows you to rest firmly flat on the ground, or pull your feet back toward you and the chaise bench gently reclines for a more relaxed horizontal position. Place one hand on either side of the head rest and you can initiate a gentle rocking motion. Once again Sands Mulholland says bring this beauty inside if you must, but the chaise bench really makes the perfect patio furniture and a place to sun tan, read by the pool, or relax by the fire. Interview: Trends at Chicago Furniture Stores

I recently had the chance to interview Dana Galler, owner of two Chicago furniture stores including Design Studio Furniture. I am always curious about popular trends and shopping patterns since furniture trends can change so rapidly. Dana was able to provide her insight into the Chicago market.

What colors are most popular in furniture? Any surprise colors?

All earth tones and organic colors are still very strong trends for us with our clients, and we consider all shades of grays to be the "next wave". Orange and robins egg blue as accents are the big "surprise" colors, usually reserved for occasional pieces, accessories, and wall colors

Are there specific products that customers with lofts or small apartments are finding particularly appealing and functional in small places?

Dining tables that fold out and double in size for entertaining; very contemporary styled sleeper sofas that do not look like "traditional sofas" and are much more comfortable then traditional 'sleepers"; anything with storage that is clean lined, modular and available in a variety of different woods and finishes. All of these are perfectly stylish, spacial solutions for urban cond-loft dwellers.
