There are many variants that separate residential and commercial design, but one of the most important differences is consideration of design codes. When creating a residential space, it is typical in a single-family residence that the aesthetic elements are tailored to the family's tastes or needs. However, when it comes to commercial design, the larger public must be considered and the design must be tailored to the kind of commercial space that is being created.
Retail design is often a sleek, or attention grabbing design that reflects the style of the brand it is representing. They are designed above all to attract a customer's interest, so that the consumer can be drawn in to make a purchase. Examples of retail design are clothing stores, accessory stores, home stores, book stores, even mega-stores like Wal-Mart fall into this category.

Modern Scandinavian furniture has a long history of innovative design and quality construction and no other designer has more awards than Ingmar Relling. The famous "Siesta" chair and ottoman are among his most prized works and still captures the true Scandinavian flavor. This elegant chair with its proud profile was originally Relling's submission to the Norwegian Furniture Council competition in 1964, where he won a well deserved first prize. Since then, the highest distinctions have been lavished on the chair and its creator. More than a million Siesta chairs have been made and exhibited at many important museums and galleries all around world. The Siesta is surprisingly comfortable thanks to a heavy canvas sling interwoven into a flexible laminated bent wood frame and soft padding that conforms to your body. The Siesta is available in various leathers in a high back or low back version from Rybo of Norway.

The Nuevo furnishings line from Dakota Jackson is designed for the modern home. I am particularly fond of the storage cabinet and credenza. For me the white squares bring out another aspect in these pieces and make them easier to tie into other colors in a room, in particular the floors or walls. White squares provide tasteful aesthetic details that blend in well with other aspects of the rooms. My next favorite piece is the occasional table though I would need it in another color besides natural to match my current living room. There are six stains available in this collection: natural, maple, cherry, cordovan, russet, and ebonized. The primary wood used in construction is maple. More information on the Nuevo furnishings collection can be found here.

Furniture maker, Dakota Jackson, teamed up with Steinway and Sons to celebrate the 300th anniversary of the famous Steinway grand piano. This was a unique collaboration where furniture designers had a chance to shape the instrument to their liking. Dakota writes that they took away extra space in the shape, but kept the overall musical ability of the piano in place. The result is a streamlined version of the famous grand piano by Steinway and Sons. The smaller, more nimble instrument may be a better fit in less spacious living rooms. More information: here.
