Many woodworkers know the challenge in constructing chairs by hand and the difficulty in maintaining consistency in look and quality. In today's mass production market, "made by hand" is often a rare thing indeed. These pictures highlight wonderful examples of hand made wood chairs from Whyrhymer Furniture. Whyrhymer has a studio in California where each of these chairs is made by their craftsmen. Only FSC certified renewable or reclaimed hardwoods are used in the construction helping support today's environmental efforts. More information: here.

Here is a fun and completely different chair that has endured the test of time. The Pastil chair from Eero Aarnio was designed in 1967 as an after thought of the famous Ball Chair. According to Aarnio " a lot of empty space is sent to the other side of the world inside the Ball Chair. A new round chair would fit in this space, and so the diameter of the Pastil chair is the same as the opening of the Ball Chair". Upon its release the Pastil received the American Industrial Design Award and was hailed as "the most comfortable form to hold up the human body" by the New York Times. Today this all fiberglass form is produced by Adelta in Finland and is available from hivemodern.com for $1695. 36.5" dia. 20.5" h

Cor Furniture recently announced that the Sinus Armchair designed by Reinhold Adolf and Hans-Jürgen Schröpfer is being added back to their collection. The Sinus Armchair was originally released in 1976 and you can see from its sleek design that is was way ahead of its time. I expect that Sinus will be warmly received by designers. The leather bands come in brown and black leather and make quite a statement in any room of the house. The small frame completes the piece creating a minimal effect on the overall size of the armchair. More information: here.

Jake Phipps is known for some really unique furniture and lighting designs and here is yet another addition to his portfolio. The "Orson" chair takes on a totally different look from every side adding to its strong visual impression. The rotational plastic composition reminds me of some of the mid-century classics like the Verner Panton Chair.

When I saw the Bespoke Silk Scarf Chair the first thing that came to mind was the fashion industry. How could you not think of that with the stunning colors and words like "Chanel" prominently appearing on the upholstery? The abstract image on the seat back reminds me of the colors in a Joan Miro painting. The interesting feature is how the abstraction works in conjunction with the major brand logos. This certainly creates a unique design. Suzan Fellman certainly makes a strong "fashion statement" with this furniture piece. Measurements: 27" x 20" x 32". Price: $6,400. Product: here.
