A traditional ceiling fan has a long metal rod that attaches the fan motor to the base which is affixed to the ceiling. You really need a fairly high ceiling to carry off this look without your guests feeling closed in above their heads. There is another category of ceiling fans called hugger or low profile which are designed to be hung in shorter ceilings. Hugger ceiling fans may have no metal rod and connect directly into the base. There is a short metal rod option as well. The great news is that these ceiling fans can be installed in shorter height ceilings. The summer heat can be stifling and the costs of energy continue to increase so it may be worth a look at low profile ceiling fans.
A coat rack may make a lot of sense if you frequently have visitors in a colder climate. David Coddaire designed the Coat Tree to provide more flair than a traditional coat rack. The coat tree takes its name from its tree inspired design. This piece is made of metal with surface abrasion and an epoxy dye to create the look. Available for $850 at the Artful Source this piece may get noticed the next time a guest comes over.
Here is an interesting piece from Azzia. This ceiling light is made of hand blown glass making it a piece of art as well as a light source. A brushed nickel base gives it a warm contemporary feel and art deco appearance. Azzia offers three different color combinations using red and white. The mosaic quatro retails for $699.00.

One of my favorite designers of the 20th century is with out a doubt George Nelson. He was able to add a modern appeal to the most simple of things from his furniture designs to some really great accessories. I particularly love his many clocks with their varied shapes and colors making an ordinary thing into a conversation piece. The Vitra Design Museum has presented a reissue of many of his most cherished timepieces in a true-to-the original form. All the clocks are made with exact materials and to correct scale for the connoisseurs.
Here is a great way to get some great looking modern art that is sure to brighten up your room, and put a smile on your face. From Textile Arts comes the marimekko do it yourself kit. Well it's actually two kits, one a frame kit with everything except the fabric in case you have your own.The second a fabric kit which has all the framing supplies as well as your choice of fabric. There is several size options, 36 or 54 inch which you will need to specify in the order process. You will need a staple gun, and an iron, and in one hour you will have a great looking wall hanging. Once you have the frame you can simply reorder fabric to change up the look over the years.
