It can be a challenge to find a dining table and chairs set that can work in small spaces such as a loft, flat, or apartment. Even if you can find a table that works, often the chairs themselves will take up too much room. Pictured here is Fusion from Ikea. Fusion is available in brown and is constructed of ash veneer, lacquered finish, and steel legs for the chairs. The table is less than 3 feet wide making it very small by normal industry standards. Measurements: Table (33 1/8"L x 33 1/8"W x 29 1/2"H); Chair (20 7/8"L x 24"W x 29 7/8"H). Price: $299. Available: here.
Here is a great idea from Fusion which combines gaming and dining into one piece of furniture. The tables featured here serve multi-functional purposes being both a pool table and a dining table. I must admit when I first heard of the concept I envisioned some hideous beast of a table. I was pleasantly surprised to see their product and how much effort that went into creating more of a home décor item than just a pool table. Now if you are faced with the challenge of dedicating a room to your spouse's pool habit their may be another option. From a space saving purpose, this is a great idea. Further, those that live in lofts, small apartments, or flats can have the hope of having a dinner party and a pool party in the same night. For pricing and availability information you must contact Fusion on their website here.
Just over 50 years ago Knoll unveiled the Pedestal Collection of tables by Eero Saarinen, known today as the "Tulip Collection", which has evolved into a symbol of mid century modern furniture design and a staple in the Knoll design legacy. In that time the collection has become the most well know modern oval and round dining table series in laminate, marble, granite or veneer. For the 50th anniversary of this iconic collection, Knoll is adding a platinum base finish and reintroducing rosewood and teak table tops which will be a permanent addition to the line. All tulip pieces ordered during the anniversary year 8-07 to 8-08 will carry a special commemorative medallion and special certificate of authenticity. When it comes to outstanding design and execution of construction, the Thomas Moser line of handcrafted wood furniture is simple, graceful, and built for a lifetime of use. In their 36 year history Thomas Moser has aspired to create quality solid wood furniture that "combines modern elegance and simplicity with a timeless quality that arises from their sense of tradition and a true love for the art of woodworking". The Vita oval dining table and chair series received inspiration from Frank Lloyd Wright's plan to make "rooms within rooms" with furniture. The Vita dining chair offers a sturdy hallmark suspension design in which the occupant's weight is cantilevered with knowledge of the physics of a human form at rest. The Vita chair is available in premium fabrics or hand stitched leathers. 40H 16W 24D $2000 The more recently introduced oval dining table hosts an 8 foot long expandable cherry veneered top that literally floats above a solid bent wood base. Furniture Fashion has reviewed some really upbeat modern furniture from the fast growing BoConcept collection that fits well in a style conscious contemporary decor. Here is the Amari round dining table in black stained oak that is impressive, simplistic, and fun to look at. It is often true that a round dining table offers a better solution to smaller space requirements, but round tables also have room for more seating than a rectangular or square dining table. As you can see, the Amari relies on a cone shaped center pedestal and is free of legs that get in the way of dinner guests. BoConcept has a full range of dining tables in wood and glass, and all the sideboards and dining chairs to complete your vision of the perfect dining room in the freshest modern styles of today. H74½ X D153cm. Bucket pendant hanging lamp and swivel chairs also available from BoConcept.
In two previous posts Furniture Fashion showed our readers some really stylish coffee tables, and tv stands by Italian manufacturer Tonin Casa. By the way the dining chairs are also theirs.
Pictured is the Stalagmite dining table by Paul Evans made in the early 1970s. Paul Evans is a sculptor and furniture designer that was first discovered in an exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Crafts in New York City in 1957. For any of us that have toured a cavern you can see stalagmites were the design inspiration for the base of the dining table. The base is made of sculpted bronze. The rectangular table top is made of glass. Market value: $4,800-$5,800. Dimensions: 96"w x 48"d x 29"h.
Here is a mid century George Nelson dining table made by Herman Miller in the 1950s. This product is referred to as a swagged-leg dining table. The origin of the name relates to the design of the legs which come done vertically and then sway at an angle until the legs meet the ground. The table top is made of maple as are the leg supports found underneath the table top. The legs are constructed of chrome. Market value: $2,200-$3,000. Dimensions: 47.5"diameter x 29"h.
Luna from De La Espada is a round dining table featuring construction from solid wood. Luna is available in oak or walnut. De La Espada's fame is in their solid wood construction. In today's environment so many manufacturers are looking to cut costs by using veneers, second hand woods, and lower quality timbers. The table top for Luna features a large slab of wood that is very thick. Additionally, the tripod legs have that same thickness and durability. These construction techniques remind me of "old world" quality where furniture in general was made much more solid and built to last a lifetime. A round dining table, such as Luna, is versatile in home decorating where it can work as a featured table or even as a dinette set. The Luna is available in three different sizes and three different finishes. Available at: De La Espada. Price: Oak - $4,225; Walnut - $4,695
Frank Gehry fancied using materials from his architectural models into his furniture designs. The Easy Edges dining table was constructed from corrugated cardboard. When cardboard is layered enough times, strength is built into the piece making it suitable for everyday use. It is hard to fathom that the Easy Edges dining table is constructed of cardboard, and yet is able to be used as an everyday piece of furniture with the stress of weight and movement while still retaining its shape. Examples of Frank Gehry furniture for resale can be difficult to find and may require some dedication on your part to locate. Dimensions: 35.75" x 82" x 28.5". Resale price range: $2,400 - $3,200.
