This is a most creative table and chair set that pushes together to conceal the chairs within the table. The Privy from DesignNobis a Turkish product, has an incredible way of saving space and being just plain cool. It was designed by a group of students under the watchful eye of Hakan Garsu, a professor of industrial design at Middle East University. The collection of award winning designs will be featured in (BOB) Best of Best magazine in 2007.
From designer Rodolfo Dordoni comes the Pilotta Chair, full-size and small armchairs, and ottomans. The chair is free of elementary geometrical shapes rather a combination of sturdy joints and constructional technology. Light and never spindly Dordoni creates solid quality with amazing comfort, solidity without excessive bulk. The basic elements are simple as well leather and wood which have been compared to the legacy of Gio Ponti, and the teachings of Franco Albini.This is just one of many outstanding furniture designs by Dordoni all of which have a similar achitectural theme.
Here is an early formal dining chair and table set designed by Gilbert Rohde in 1933. Rohde was a modernist that drew inspiration from the simplicity of Bauhaus design. He combined that simplicity with the flair of Art Deco. Gilbert Rhode designed many modern pieces for Herman Miller in the 1930s. The set pictured here was from an auction lot that sold in Chicago in 2002 for $2,900. This same style chair is found in many furniture stores today.
It is very likely that everyone has seen a table by Eero Saarinen. This understated design is probably the most recognizable collection of tables in the past 50 years.Originally introduced in 1956 this classic is a true staple in modern furniture.
In his purist approach to design, Finnish-born Eero Saarinen sought out the essential idea and reduced it to the most effective structural solution. "The underside of typical chairs and tables makes a confusing, unrestful world," explained Saarinen. "I wanted to clear up the slum of legs." In his pedestal collection, which includes a dining, coffee and side table, Saarinen realized his ideal of formal unity: "Every significant piece of furniture has a holistic structure." Winner of the 1969 Museum of Modern Art Award.
With the trend moving to cheaper and faster, it is nice to see real quality at a reasonable price. The Elite Modern line made right here in the good old USA, is a very well made product with an outstanding, clean look. My personal favorite is the Tangent dining series which can fill most size requirement and color schemes. The table is available in round, square and rectangular. There are several chair options which can also be matched with height adjustable barstools and occasional table groups for a complete look.They even offer a bench for a unique dining look. Other accent items like buffet tables and a great line of bars will add a modern look that will be timeless, not trendy.
