Going greener is increasing in popularity. I found this article from the Washington Post that gives some ideas about making the home more enviroment friendly and discusses trends in housing such as larger kitchens and upscale bathroom fixtures.
Homeowners continue to want larger kitchens, and now they increasingly want eco-friendly materials for their floors and space for recycling centers, according to a survey.
Upscale bathroom features are also making big gains in popularity. Those include such upgrades as radiant-heated floors and multiple-head showers, according to the latest Home Design Trends Survey of members of the American Institute of Architects. The survey is based on kitchen and bath trends during the fourth quarter of 2006. Whirlpools, it seems, are losing favor.

When you have bought your handmade solid oak furniture, you should know how to care for it properly. Besides the obvious 'handle with care' when moving your furniture, do not drop it from a great height and so on, here are a few tips that we mention to our clients to help them care for the furniture that we make for them.
Solid wood furniture needs to be waxed with natural beeswax regularly. The traditional thick 'paste' lightly applied with a soft rag (old towelling) is best, or a natural spray on is quite adequate, but silicon spray is not suitable as it does not feed or nourish the wood, but merely puts a slippery shiny surface on the wood.

A three-part program on the art of craft -- the furniture makers, potters, quilters and others who have charted American culture with their hands -- is scheduled to air at 8 p.m. Wednesday, May 30th on PBS.

The guests of House & Home were not the only ones assessing the work on display at the International Contemporary Furniture Fair. As usual, a panel of design magazine editors -- this year there were 11, from Britain, France, Italy, Canada and the United States -- gave out their own awards. (Interestingly, there was little overlap between their picks and those of the impromptu critics.)

One of the most fulfilling projects many of you will take on is the interior decorating of your home. Some of the areas that will need careful planning are colors, furniture, and accessorizing. Getting the layout right and making sure all things fit properly is of course a huge part of the project. Simply visualizing it is not always possible, especially when the whole home or business is being done. There are some very good software packages available to help make things a lot easier.
