For a bold and obviously tasteful home décor there is no need to look past the Roche-Bobois collection of contemporary furniture. In the past Furniture Fashion has reviewed some outstanding new releases by the French manufacturer that have made our readers take note. Here are two more that I know you will love. The Marina Platform Bed by designer Sacha Lakic reveals predominate wood grains of wrap around Walnut wood panels and integrated night stands. A leather topped headboard adjusts to a comfortable position manually or electronically complimented by matching multilevel chest of drawers that doubles as a bench. Moving to the dining room, Daniel Rode accents his Vertigo dining table and buffet with striking Ebony veneers and contrasting matte Inox pedestal base. I really like expanding structure of this group that starts with a small base as if it were floating. If you are planning or adding to your contemporary home décor, Roche-Bobois is a must see.
Established & Sons has always had a keen eye for cutting edge design, and their latest limited editions series includes a collection from Amanda Levete, appropriately named Future Systems. Among the super slick furniture items in the 2008 collection are three releases that are quite original. The "East" marble desk made from Nero Marquinia black marble relies on the owner's wall for support but stands on its own when it comes to style. Levete also designed the "West" walnut bench with a free flowing organic shape, and it would seem she doesn't use straight lines very much. The third is the winner of the Design Week award in which the Judges were impressed by the fluidity and seamlessness of the design. Made from fiber glass reinforced plastic, the Drift Bench seats six people comfortably and comes in three vibrant colors. The items in the Future Systems series are limited productions ,but there are many great designs in the Established & Sons line up that are quite attainable.
Frank Gehry fancied using materials from his architectural models into his furniture designs. The Easy Edges dining table was constructed from corrugated cardboard. When cardboard is layered enough times, strength is built into the piece making it suitable for everyday use. It is hard to fathom that the Easy Edges dining table is constructed of cardboard, and yet is able to be used as an everyday piece of furniture with the stress of weight and movement while still retaining its shape. These bar stools are made by the Cherner Chair Company founded by the sons of Norman Cherner in 1999. Owning the copyrights to the original designs, the sons started manufacturing many of his mid century classic chairs, tables, and stools to meet modern demand. The original techniques are still employed where layers of laminate are stacked on top of one another and then shaped into the form of the chair, table, or stool.
