The question between a sofa, chair or bench is one that many families wrestle with as they determine what makes for the best living room furniture combination. Here is a recent entry at the Milan Furniture Fair by o4i. This piece is called the Diagonal that is being offered by Martela, a Finnish Furniture company. The driving force behind the sofa design is the great need for being flexible when it comes to designing seating for public places. The pictures present a striking array of possibilities in how Diagonal can be put together. An interesting fact is that Diagonal's core essence comes down to two basic pieces: a padded seat and a screen. These two pieces can be arranged however needed to suit the situation. I like that the essence of the design is so basic and yet flexible in how it can suit our ever changing needs in furniture for public places. More information: here.

Here is a nice video highlighting some of the great works of designer Arne Jacobsen. The video is set in Copenhagen where it talks about his influence on modern architecture. From architecture we move into furniture design discussing some of his most famous chairs. There is a look inside the Fritz Hansen factory that still makes many of Arne Jacobsen's chairs today. Don't forget to check out the footage of suite 606 of the Royal Hotel where the original designed hotel suite is still available for rent today.
