None of us want to be in a situation where we need medical treatment. Worse yet is when you have to rely on family, friends, or medical professionals to assist you in your daily activities. So when it comes to medical furniture, how aesthetically pleasing is that to your house design? Typically, medical design focuses more on functionality as opposed to visual appeal. The Open Arms Patient Chair from Cabot Wrenn goes against the grain with this piece which was a winner of the NeoCon Gold Award in 2008. The medical furniture recliner is designed to provide improved access to the patient and to help the patient get out of the chair. My favorite aspect of this piece is its good looks. Pictured here in leather, Open Arms comes in many other leather colors and fabric options as well. More information can be found here.

Fine Leather meets German engineering in the W Schillig collection of sofas, sectionals, chairs, and my favorite, the "Revelation" double wide chaise recliner. This year at the High Point Furniture Market in North Carolina I saw and sat in acres of leather furniture but this was the most impressive piece. This double wide chaise has enough look to stand its own but the one piece back recliner quickly makes comfort the Revelation's best attribute. In addition, the extra wide seating surface offers room for two people to easily relax while taking in a long movie. W Schillig's entire collection of modern and transitional leather furniture can be seen and found here with help from their dealer locator.

New from Fjords, a division of Hjellegjerde of Norway is the 110 Avensis reclining collection that has versatility in its options. This Hejellegjerde furniture line has a long history of meticulously made hand crafted merchandise that pays very close attention to posture, and as you can see visual appeal as well. Both chairs and sofas are equipped with their Fjords Active Release System which provides the correct neck support in all positions and is perfect for reading, napping, or entertaining. As you might suspect the high back sofas and love seats all recline but Fjords has also included a reclining feature in the low back models as well for added comfort. The Avensis is available in high or low back sofa, love seat, or chair with a variety of matching swivel recliner and ottoman combinations. Wood trim is available as an option on sofa groups.

Here is another swivel lounge chair from the Designed series by Hjellegjerde of Norway. The "Baloo" features a rocking mechanism that allows this 60's inspired retro modern lounge chair with decidedly geometric shapes to be as comfortable as good looking. I really like the superb detailing and solid construction that Hjellegjerde is well known for, and the Designed series of seating is no exception to their long history of quality furniture. In addition to the rest of the Designed lounge chair and recliner collection, see the Fjords and Hjellegjerde products here.
