In what the Elle Decoration Collection calls the "Jigsaw" concept, many designers are giving life to furniture that has multiple configuration options. The main reason for this emerging trend is versatility, allowing the piece to be used in spaces of various sizes. These modules are "based on shapes like graphically geometric, sinuous, and futuristic forms making this smart furniture usable in more settings". Ron Arad's Misfits modular sofa sectional from Moroso of Italy is a prime example of a very versatile item which has a multitude of options. Misfits can be used as a long sofa, side by side chaise lounges, or a sectional with ottoman to name a few.

It often takes one quick glance to decide if you like a particular design or not, for me the Alpha sofa series from Bo Concept took even less than that. I really am impressed with the well rounded design of the entire group and how it breaks away from the straight lines so many furniture styles, especially sofas adopt. My first impression was a combination of casual and informal, but the more I looked Alpha took on more sophistication and style, especially in the sharp white leather. For me, I appreciate small spaces and in particular, their central location to urban centers and cultural venues. When you have that great place in the city, you will most certainly get visitors. So how do you accommodate guests when you have a very small space such as a loft or apartment? That is where optimizing your furniture comes in. There are many pieces on the market today that serve multiple purposes. One of my favorites is the sofa bed. I think sofa beds offer terrific functionality when needed and provide day to day living requirements of being a great piece of furniture to lounge on. You will not always have overnight guests, but if you do, it is nice to offer them a place to sleep. Also, if your spouse, girlfriend, or boyfriend misbehaves, you can send them out to the sofa for a good nights sleep! Pictured here is a sofa bed from Design Within Reach. On a trip to the Natuzzi headquarters in High Point North Carolina this fall, I had a great look at their 2008 collection of sofa groups, recliners, accent chairs, and sectionals. I say look, it was far more than that. Actually it was several hours of sitting in luxurious leather furniture that was simply stunning to the eye, and pleasing to the touch.
