For the wine enthusiast hopefully still in the design stage of their homes, the Spiral Wine Cellar may be the solution to keeping the conditions right for long term wine storage. The Cellars were designed in 1978 by a Frenchmen who realized that most modern homes had no significant place to store wine in the proper conditions that the earth and its constant temperature can provide. The Spiral Wine Cellars are concrete wrapped in a water tight lining and passive ventilation keeps the temperature around 55°. As you might expect these babies aren't cheap costing around $30,000 for materials and installation, but you only live once and wine make living so much better. Uten.silo from designer Dorothee Maurer-Becker, 1969 is one of the best known plastic designs from that era and is the perfect "out of the way" place to store and keep track of all the kitchen, bar, and bathroom trinkets we normally look through drawers for. Today, this colorful wall mounted storage tidy is a veritable design icon and a true-to-the-original version of the product has now been reissued by Vitra Design Museum. The uten.silo is available in White, Red, and Black and is available in two sizes from Hive Modern. If you don't have built-ins and are staring at a blank wall deciding on what color to paint next, think again. In "8 White Wall Units and Home Storage Shelving Ideas" I set out to show other possibilities other than a painted all. These 8 designs can be created by an individual just like you with our without the aid of an interior designer. For many of us, a wall that is thought out with a shelving concept or wall unit will be a vast improvement over what we currently see. These concepts are not limited to white and can be made in a variety of colors. Each design is put together by basic shapes, bit by bit. By measuring walls and determining width and height a concept can begin to come together. Some people create their design and then use cardboard cutouts to better visualize the wall unit or home storage shelving concept. In the dining room picture you will see how the wall unit is more closed off which lends itself to conceal china, stemware and serving dishes.
