The living room is typically the cornerstone of a home's design and often one of the most frequented rooms. I am always on the lookout for ideas on furniture that can serve as storage to keep the living room clutter free as much as possible. In most living room design pictures we see items such as sofas, sectionals, occasional chairs, end tables, and a place for the television. What we don't typically see are good solutions for storage and organizing. I have included seven pictures from the contemporary design collection from Sawaya and Moroni. Even if these are not to your tastes, the designs and shape of these pieces may give you ideas about what can work in your living room. You can always find one in the style that you seek once you see a shape that will fit your decorating style. Via.

In Color Trends Part I, I discussed new color trends and went into detail on colors and how they become fashionable for the year. However, I fear I through in some technical terms and didn't explain them. At the request of some of my readers, I would like to explain basic color theory and schemes:
The Primary Colors are pure hues that are combined in different ways to create different colors. There are only three pure hues: Red, Yellow, and Blue.
Secondary Hues are the result of combining two pure hues together to make a new color. Orange, Green, and Violet make up this category.
Tertiary Hues are created when you combine a primary hue with a secondary hue. The hybrids created from these unions are Red-Orange, Yellow-Orange, Yellow-Green, Blue-Green, Blue-Violet, and Red-Violet.
Monochromatic color schemes are based on one color and are most successful when using light, medium, and dark tones to create a dramatic effect.

Furniture Fashion just received these submission pictures for decorative concrete floors that would be perfect for the contemporary home. Concrete has long been a favorite design agent for architects and interior designers due to its flexibility, reasonable cost, and durability. In the pictures provided, you can see the detail created on the floors. The decorative imagery adds beauty to the concrete floors creating a stunning visual effect in the home. Interior design with concrete offers another advantage in today's world where so many people suffer from allergies. Floors can be easily cleaned and will not build up with dust or other allergenic irritants. More information at: Transparent House.
Where do interior designers go to find the newest trends in home design on an international or domestic level?
Design trends are funny things, inspiration comes from everywhere. Interior designers learn about design trends through trade shows like NeoCon and KBIS, as well as looking through magazines and reading trade articles. If you want to learn about trends coming to the U.S. ahead of time, you can look for international magazines at specialty news stands or magazine shops. If you are looking for a certain kind of cultural trend, say Parisan or Indian, this is the best option. Fortunately for everyone, the internet now makes everything accessible, so the trends you see are sure to come to the U.S. soon. As far as color trends, fashion and art are major influencers, for more on this topic please click this link: Color trends for 2008.
I recently had the chance to interview Dana Galler, owner of two Chicago furniture stores including Design Studio Furniture. I am always curious about popular trends and shopping patterns since furniture trends can change so rapidly. Dana was able to provide her insight into the Chicago market.
What colors are most popular in furniture? Any surprise colors?
All earth tones and organic colors are still very strong trends for us with our clients, and we consider all shades of grays to be the "next wave". Orange and robins egg blue as accents are the big "surprise" colors, usually reserved for occasional pieces, accessories, and wall colors
Are there specific products that customers with lofts or small apartments are finding particularly appealing and functional in small places?
Dining tables that fold out and double in size for entertaining; very contemporary styled sleeper sofas that do not look like "traditional sofas" and are much more comfortable then traditional 'sleepers"; anything with storage that is clean lined, modular and available in a variety of different woods and finishes. All of these are perfectly stylish, spacial solutions for urban cond-loft dwellers.

Pacific Green was created by Australian designer, Bruce Dowse. Pacific Green's vision is to save rainforest and other indigenous trees by constructing furniture from palm trees. World wide demand for coconuts has sharply declined creating a surplus of palm trees. By only taking older trees in the twilight of their life span, he is able to help sustain the environment by not using more popular trees. It also, helps when you have great looking furniture like the Maui Lounge Sectional pictured here. The Maui Lounge is constructed of palm wood and leather. Using all natural manufacturing techniques with no waste byproducts, this sectional sofa is sure to beautify many homes. Also pictured, is the matching PNG Coffee Table. One of the largest requests a designer gets is to help with color coordination and creating a color palate. Interior design professionals keep up to date with the latest trends, and know which of last season's trends will be out of style, as well as which ones will endure.
These trends are prepared by what we call color forecasters. Some of the best sources you can use for color trends are paint companies, they spend hundreds of thousands of dollars to watch, research, and follow upcoming color trends. They go to great lengths to keep industry professionals up to date on the new trends because it can be a lucrative partnership. They provide the latest color trend information, and designers introduce the new colors and trends to our clients, normally resulting in a sale for the paint company.
We pull colors from our surroundings and environment, which is always changing, as does our taste and curiosity about the world we live in. So it is quite natural that our feelings toward colors would change annually. Color forecasters look to many influences to determine the years hot and cool colors, but here are this years contributors:
1. Cultural awareness- Brazil, Russia, India, China, and Egypt
2. Technology- Hybrid Colors
3. Nature- Bright Rainforest hues and contrasting colors
4. Travel- Coastal Living
5. Pop Culture- Think Pink
6. Fashion- Nautical Movement, Rich Earth
7. Demographics- Being aware of who you are appealing to
8. Environment- Environmental concerns and Green Design (does not refer to the color green itself)

Well the new colors for Spring have arrived. This image shows some colors of home accessory items that are to be featured this spring. We are in for some bright colors indeed. I have already seen many of these colors featured in personal fashion products and advertising. It remains to be seen if we will see many couches and chairs in these colors! The future is looking bright this Spring.
If you are into "green" products and love the look of natural ingredients, then Bleu Nature has something for you. Founded in northern France in 1995 by Frank Lefebvre, Blue Nature makes the best of mother natures gifts. The principal material is driftwood combined with hemp, pebbles, stones and flat rocks, raw linen, boiled wool, leather, skins, teak, slate and petrified wood. A team design and construction effort gives birth and "creations are born of an encounter between the technical mastery of French craftsmen and the prolonged work of nature. Nature has fashioned each piece of driftwood over time, rendering every item they produce unique in both form and dimension". The complete line includes tables, sofas, chairs, accessories, lamps, and petrified wood.
